Most aftermarket cams use the later style.

Installing just the cams is pretty simple once you get the valve covers off. The only thing you really need to be concerned with (besides the obvious of putting everything back together the way it came apart) is to get all of the valve caps on the same way they came off and getting the right torque on the bolts. If you have plenum pull experience then it shouldn't be too hard. Use the timing belt, engine rebuild and 60k service faqs as they'll get you through all of the disassembly process. Between those and a factory service manual you shouldn't have an issue if you're at least fairly mechanically inclined.

Idle should be pretty good, I have a JWT camshaft set that is 264 duration with a bit more lift and once I got the car adjusted it idled just fine.

You should be fine with a stock ECU and the cams, the change isn't that drastic that it's going to seriously throw the timing or air/fuel ratio off.

Realistically though you'll probably see better results if you spent your money on a cat-back exhaust and the underdrive pulley you brought up in your profile. Cams in a non-turbo car probably wouldn't be worth more than 10hp, maybe 20 with all the other upgrades that help take advantage of them. For the price and the amount of effort invovled, they really aren't that great. But I've never driven a non-turbo Z with them so maybe they make a huge seat of the pants difference or even a decent amount of power. Try searching just for "cams" or "camshaft" to find a post by a non-turbo owner with a set of cams.

And for the part you probably don't want to hear for the hundredth time, if you are really looking for power it's easier to buy a Twin Turbo than modify a Non-turbo.
